Dementia affects us all
According to Alzheimer’s Research UK, 24.6 million people in the UK – that’s 38% of the population – know a family member or close friend living with dementia.
But in a way, dementia – and our failure to come up with an effective system of dementia care – affects us all. It’s estimated that 25% of our NHS hospital beds are occupied by people with dementia; many of them have no medical reason to remain there, but they can’t be sent home because there’s no care package to support them when they get there. Or then we see reports like this:
The cost of dementia to the economy is staggering. In the UK it’s reckoned to be £26 billion per year. And we’re worried about the costs of Brexit!?
That’s just here. According to WHO figures, there are 50 million people living with dementia worldwide right now, with numbers expected to reach 150 million by 2050. The cost to the world economy today is reckoned to be around $1 trillion. If the methods we’re proposing could cut that figure by half, just think how much better we could use the money!
That’s why The Care Combine isn’t just a local campaign. No matter where in the world you live, there’s a role for you to play.
So what can you do to help?
If you agree that our campaign is important, one of the best things you can do will just take a few minutes of your time. Read our posts, absorb the content, and then share our content and your thoughts with your own social media contacts. You can get started here.
Perhaps someone in your family is affected by dementia, and you’d like to see a Bine Centre opened in your area. Maybe, you’d even like to start laying the groundwork yourself – you and a group of friends.
Perhaps you or an organisation you work for have ideas for meaningful Bine activities. Or you have special expertise that could be useful – for example, we’ll need someone to help arrange DBS checks for our volunteers.
Maybe you’d just like to help at one of the Centres – you’re contemplating a career in care (- care jobs won’t be robotised!), and this seems like a good way to start.
Whatever you feel you can bring to The Care Combine campaign, we’d like to find a way to use it. The starting point is at the top-right of this page – the ‘Enjoying Our Site?’ box, where we invite you to sign up for our weekly newsletter and become a campaign supporter.
In our weekly email, we’ll detail exactly what we’re looking for and how you can tell us about your interests and ideas.
So don’t delay. Working together we can improve the lives of millions. That’s another meaning of The BINE. Big Ideas Need Everyone.
